Namib-Naukluft National Park Tours

Namib-Naukluft National Park is Namibia’s largest protected area and one of the most iconic desert landscapes in the world. Stretching nearly 50,000 square kilometres, it encompasses the Namib Desert (considered the oldest desert on Earth), the Naukluft mountain range, and coastal treasures like Sandwich Harbour. Its best-known attractions are Sossusvlei, with towering red dunes, and Sesriem Canyon, carved by the Tsauchab River.

History

The park was first proclaimed in 1907 as Game Reserve No. 3 under German colonial administration. Over the decades, its boundaries expanded to include Sandwich Harbour (1941), the Naukluft Mountains (1979), and a 1,600 km strip of Atlantic Ocean coast, making it Namibia’s first marine reserve. In 1986, parts of the restricted Sperrgebiet diamond mining zone were added, giving the park its present vast size.

Geography

The park is defined by towering dunes, some rising over 300 metres—the tallest in the world. Their burnt orange colour comes from oxidized iron in the sand, a sign of their immense age. Inland, dramatic granite inselbergs and sandstone kopjes punctuate the landscape, while fog drifting in from the Atlantic provides more moisture than rainfall, which averages just 106 mm annually. Along the coast, lagoons, wetlands, and mudflats attract hundreds of thousands of birds.

Ecology & Wildlife

Despite its hyper-arid climate, Namib-Naukluft supports a surprising array of life:

  • Mammals: Gemsbok, springbok, hyenas, leopards, baboons, jackals, caracals, cape foxes, and bat-eared foxes.

  • Reptiles & Insects: Snakes, geckos, and desert-adapted beetles like Stenocara gracilipes, which harvest water from fog.

  • Birds: Flamingos, pelicans, cranes, and Rüppell’s korhaan thrive in wetlands and grasslands.

Key Attractions

  • Sossusvlei & Dead Vlei: Iconic clay pans surrounded by monumental dunes, with 550-year-old dead camelthorn trees preserved in the arid climate.

  • Sesriem Canyon: A narrow gorge carved by the Tsauchab River, offering dramatic geological views.

  • Naukluft Mountains: Rugged terrain protecting Hartmann’s mountain zebra.

  • Sandwich Harbour: A lagoon and wetland system rich in birdlife.

  • Moon Landscape & Welwitschia Plains: Unique geological formations and ancient plants near Swakopmund.

Best Time to Visit

  • April–October (Dry Season): Cooler temperatures, clear skies, and excellent conditions for hiking and photography.

  • November–March (Wet Season): Occasional rains bring greenery and bird migrations, though heat can be intense.

Visitor Tips

  • Access: Main entry points include Sesriem (for Sossusvlei) and Swakopmund/Walvis Bay (for coastal areas).

  • Vehicles: A 4x4 is recommended for dune areas and remote tracks.

  • Accommodation: Lodges, campsites, and desert retreats are available near Sesriem and Naukluft.

  • Supplies: Carry water, food, and fuel—distances are vast and facilities limited.

  • Clothing: Light wear for hot days, warm layers for cold desert nights, and sun protection.

  • Safety: Respect fragile ecosystems, avoid climbing dunes outside designated areas, and travel prepared for extreme conditions.
