Tours

Lake Chivero Recreational Park is a protected area located just outside Harare in Zimbabwe’s Zvimba District. Covering about 6,100 hectares (15,000 acres), the park surrounds Lake Chivero, a vital water reservoir for the capital city. Established in 1952 and later reclassified under the Parks and Wildlife Act of 1975, it is managed by the Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Management Authority. In recognition of its ecological importance, Lake Chivero was designated a Ramsar Wetland in 2013, highlighting its role in supporting biodiversity and water conservation.

Landscape & Ecology

The park lies on the highveld and is dominated by miombo woodlands, primarily Brachystegia and Julbernardia globiflora. These woodlands are interspersed with species such as Terminalia sericea, Parinari curatellifolia, and Monotes glaber, providing ample food for browsers. The western boundary is marked by the Manyame Range, a line of ironstone hills where the dam was constructed, while the rest of the park consists of rolling granite countryside dotted with castle koppies.

Wildlife

Lake Chivero Recreational Park hosts a wide variety of animals. Large mammals such as southern white rhinos, giraffes, zebras, wildebeest, kudu, waterbuck, eland, sable, and tsessebe roam the game park. Smaller species like warthogs, bush pigs, baboons, monkeys, duikers, and hyraxes are also common. Nocturnal animals include civets, genets, jackals, porcupines, caracals, pangolins, servals, and bush babies.

Birdlife is abundant, making the park a paradise for birdwatchers. Species range from ostriches and fish eagles to kingfishers, lilac-breasted rollers, jacanas, storks, and herons. The seasonal wetlands and lake margins provide excellent habitats for water birds.

Archaeology & Culture

The park contains several archaeological and cultural sites, including rock paintings at Bushman’s Point. These sites reflect the long history of human settlement in the region and add cultural depth to the natural attractions.

Accommodation

Facilities are available on both the south and north banks of the lake. The south bank offers lodges and chalets, including Sunbird, Stonechat, Hornbill, Fish Eagle, and Kingfisher lodges, all self-catering units with kitchens and lounges. Chalets range from single-room facilities to larger three-roomed units.

On the north bank, the Msasa caravan and camping site provides braai stands, firewood, and ablution blocks with hot and cold showers. This area is popular with campers and day visitors from Harare, located only 29 kilometers away.

Activities

Visitors to Lake Chivero Recreational Park can enjoy:

  • Game Viewing: The game park, established in 1962, hosts a variety of animals introduced from Hwange and Lake Kariba during “Operation Noah.”

  • Fishing: The most popular activity, with five designated fishing and picnic sites around the lake.

  • Boating: Recreational boating is permitted, with private boat hire available.

  • Horse Riding: Guided rides are offered daily (except Mondays), lasting about 90 minutes each.

  • Hiking & Game Walks: Guided walks can be arranged, lasting from one to five hours depending on visitor preference.

Best Time to Visit

The park can be visited year-round, but the dry season (May–October) is best for game viewing as animals congregate near water sources. The wet season (November–April) brings lush vegetation and vibrant birdlife, ideal for birdwatchers and photographers.
