Tours

Sibilobilo Safari Area is a protected wilderness located along Lake Kariba in northern Zimbabwe. Established in 1975, it was originally a Controlled Hunting Area before being proclaimed a safari zone following the impoundment of Lake Kariba. Today, it remains a relatively undeveloped conservation area, offering a mix of islands and peninsular terrain with unique geological and ecological features.

Landscape & Geography

The safari area covers 13 islands within Lake Kariba, the largest being Namembere, Namagwaba, and Weather Islands, along with 2,130 hectares of the Sengwa Peninsula. The region is underlain by rocks of the Mesozoic Upper Karoo Group, dominated by sandstones and basalts. Fossil specimens of Vulcanodon karibaensis, one of the earliest known sauropod dinosaurs, have been discovered here in the Vulcanodon beds within the Batoka basalt, adding paleontological significance to the area.

Flora & Fauna

Although detailed records are limited, Sibilobilo’s habitats support a variety of wildlife typical of the Lake Kariba ecosystem. The islands and peninsula provide seasonal grazing and shelter for antelope, buffalo, and elephants, while predators such as lions and leopards occasionally roam the area. Aquatic life in Lake Kariba, including hippos, crocodiles, and diverse fish species, contributes to the ecological richness. Birdlife is also abundant, with waterfowl and raptors frequently observed around the islands.

Archaeology & Culture

The area has potential archaeological and cultural significance, though formal documentation remains sparse. Its proximity to Lake Kariba and the Sengwa region suggests historical use by local communities for fishing, hunting, and spiritual practices.

Tourism & Access

Sibilobilo is not heavily developed for tourism. There are currently no lodges or formal accommodation facilities within the safari area, though camping may be possible under concession arrangements. Access is primarily by boat from Kariba town or via motorable tracks from Bumi Hills.

The safari area is divided into two sections:

  • Section A: The islands.

  • Section B: The Sengwa Peninsula.

Both sections are managed under concession agreements, sometimes used for recreational hunting or specialized safari operations.

Activities

Visitors to Sibilobilo Safari Area can enjoy:

  • Boating & Fishing: Explore Lake Kariba’s waters and fish for species such as tigerfish and bream.

  • Wildlife Viewing: Spot elephants, antelope, hippos, and crocodiles along the shoreline.

  • Birdwatching: Observe diverse water birds and raptors around the islands.

  • Exploration: Visit the Sengwa Peninsula for its rugged terrain and geological interest.

Best Time to Visit

The dry season (May-October) is the best time to visit, as wildlife congregates near water sources and boat access is easier. The wet season (November-April) brings lush vegetation but can make access more challenging.

Visitor Tips

  • Plan for limited facilities -bring supplies and camping gear if staying overnight.

  • Boat access from Kariba or Bumi Hills is the most reliable way to reach the islands.

  • Respect concession rules, as parts of the area may be reserved for specific operators.

  • Explore responsibly, as the area is ecologically sensitive and culturally significant.
