Mombasa Marine National Park and Reserve lies along the Kenyan coast near Mombasa, making it one of the most accessible and popular marine parks in the country. The park itself covers 10 km² (2,500 acres), while the surrounding reserve spans 200 km² (49,400 acres). It is the most frequently visited of Kenya’s marine parks, thanks to its proximity to tourist beaches and vibrant coral reefs.
The area is characterized by warm tropical waters, with surface temperatures ranging between 25 °C and 31 °C year‑round, stable salinity, and moderate nutrient levels-conditions that support thriving marine ecosystems.
The park was officially recognized through legislation in 1987, aimed at protecting coral reefs and marine life from over‑fishing, reef stripping, and poaching. Despite these protections, illegal fishing and poaching persisted until 1992, when night patrols were introduced. By 1994, stricter enforcement and bans on fishing finally brought the park under full protection, securing its biodiversity and tourism value.
The waters of Mombasa Marine Park are rich in marine life. Species include crabs, starfish, sea cucumbers, sea urchins, stonefish, corals, turtles, and seagrasses. Migratory birds such as crab plovers also frequent the area. Dolphins are often spotted offshore, adding to the park’s appeal for visitors.
The best time to visit is during the dry seasons (December-March and July-October), when seas are calm and visibility is excellent for snorkeling and diving. The rainy seasons (April-June and November) bring nutrient‑rich waters that attract more marine life, though sea conditions can be rougher.

Visitors can easily access the park from Mombasa’s tourist beaches, with boat operators offering trips to the coral reefs. Snorkeling gear is often provided, but bringing personal equipment ensures comfort. Sunscreen, hats, and lightweight clothing are essential for coastal sun protection. Early mornings during the dry season provide the best conditions for clear water and abundant sightings.
